About Indie Pharmacy
We believe your pharmacist should work for you. Period.
The problem we saw
CVS bought Aetna for $69 billion. The company filling your prescriptions became the same company deciding what your insurance covers. That's a conflict of interest disguised as convenience.
Meanwhile, independent pharmacies — the ones where the pharmacist knows your name, catches your drug interactions, and actually spends time with you — are disappearing. Over 3,000 have closed since 2010. The system is stacked against them — squeezed by PBMs, undercut by corporate networks, and buried in search results behind chains with billion-dollar marketing budgets.
What we're doing about it
Indie Pharmacy is the largest directory of independently owned pharmacies in America. Every listing is verified — confirmed locally owned, operated by real pharmacists, and completely separate from corporate chains and insurance companies.
For consumers, the directory is free. Search by city, state, or ZIP code and find a pharmacy that puts your health first.
For pharmacy owners, we offer IndiePro — the business tools independents need to compete with chains. CRM, automated follow-ups, review management, and professional websites. All pre-built for pharmacy workflows.
Who's behind this
Indie Pharmacy was built by Brian Mangum, a software engineer and small business advocate based in South Carolina. After watching a family member struggle to get personalized care at a chain pharmacy — and then seeing the difference when they switched to an independent — it became clear that the problem wasn't awareness. It was discovery. People wanted local pharmacies but couldn't find them.
We built Indie Pharmacy to fix that. Our team combines healthcare industry research with technology to make independent pharmacies as easy to find as the nearest CVS.
How we verify listings
Every pharmacy in our directory goes through a multi-step verification process. We don't just list anyone who claims to be independent.
- 1
NPI Registry cross-reference
We start with the National Provider Identifier database maintained by CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) to identify licensed pharmacy providers.
- 2
Chain filtering
We automatically exclude known chains (CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, Walmart, Costco, etc.) and corporate-owned pharmacies using name matching and ownership data.
- 3
Website & business verification
We visit each pharmacy's website and Google Business profile to confirm they are locally owned and actively operating. We extract services offered, accreditations, and features.
- 4
Google Places validation
We pull ratings, review counts, and photos from Google to give consumers trusted third-party data alongside our directory information.
- 5
Ongoing monitoring
Listings are periodically reviewed. If a pharmacy is acquired by a chain or closes, we remove it. Pharmacy owners and consumers can also report inaccuracies via our contact form.
Our data sources
We aggregate data from multiple authoritative sources to build and maintain our directory:
- NPI Registry — The federal database of all healthcare providers, maintained by CMS
- Google Places API — Ratings, reviews, photos, and business hours
- Pharmacy websites — Services, accreditations (NCPDP, ACHC, PCAB), and ownership details
- Owner submissions — Pharmacy owners can submit and update their own listings for free
- Community reports — Users can flag inaccuracies or suggest new pharmacies
What we believe
- Your pharmacist should know your name. And your medications, your allergies, and your family.
- Healthcare decisions should be healthcare decisions. When your pharmacy owns your insurance, the incentives are backwards.
- Local businesses deserve modern tools. Independent pharmacies should compete on care, and have the technology to back it up.
- Transparency matters. Every listing on our site is verified independent. Every single one.
